Digital Leaders schools put on the best Safer Internet Day events to date!

Posted on

Safer Internet Day was on 5th February 2019 and saw schools all over the UK finding ways to spread awareness about internet safety.

Safer Internet Day was celebrated in over 150 countries across the world and is coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre. This year’s theme was ‘Our internet, our choice: understanding consent in a digital world’ and Digital Leaders were encouraged to share what they did on the online training platforms. We also saw so many schools sharing their activities on Twitter, tagging #ChildnetDL and @ChildnetDL.

Below are a selection of schools who we noticed went above and beyond for Safer Internet Day 2019 so we asked them for some more information on the extremely creative and inspiring ways they celebrated the day!

Newcastle High School for Girls Junior School

Newcastle High School Year 5 Digital Leaders created and performed a short play about a girl who meets up with someone she has been speaking to online which they performed in front of the whole school!  The play ended by advising students to speak to a Digital Leader or adult if they felt unsafe.  One Digital Leader said,

“Putting on a play is a good way to make smaller children interested and more focused on the things being said.”

Yes, we agree – it is a fantastic way to engage all audiences!

On top of this, the Digital Leaders ran a lesson about internet safety and cyberbullying, including a PowerPoint presentation and a Kahoot quiz with sweets for the winning team!

One ofthe most original ideas that we’ve heard yet is certainly Newcastle High School Year 6 Digital Leaders who wrote and performed a puppet show for Key Stage 1 about keeping safe online!  Their group leader said,

“It was lovely to see how well prepared and organised the girls were.”

We agree, fantastic job Digital Leaders!

St Stephen’s Junior School, Kent

St Stephen’s Junior School in Kent had an extremely successful Safer Internet Day and put on an array of activities.  The Digital Leaders presented a Safer Internet Day PowerPoint presentation to each year group and also to parents and carers.

They also fed back results from a pupil’s online safety survey to parents and carers via a newsletter they had created. The newsletter highlighted that more children are using apps and games that are not age appropriate, and the Digital Leaders listed age ratings of games and offered advice to parents on how to tackle some difficult issues.  Their teacher said,

“They spent the day promoting the themes and even gave up their lunch time to give out information and advice in the dining hall.”

Wow, that shows real dedication!

King’s Ely

King’s Ely Digital Leaders ran their Safer Internet Day activities over a whole week!  In fact, Digital Leaders have been busy practicing for their Safer Internet Day assembly since early January!

The Leaders in Year 8 created their own video to help spread digital safety which was previewed in assembly and thoroughly enjoyed by other students.  Journalism Club also helped Digital Leaders to create information videos about some current popular apps and social media platforms where they interviewed a teacher in their school.   We love to see students collaborating for such a worthy cause- fantastic work, King’s Ely, your Digital Leaders are an inspiration!

Bredon School

Bredon Digital Leaders did some amazing work for Safer Internet Day and Lauren, who is Head Girl as well as a Digital Leader, went above and beyond in her role for the day!  Lauren ran a lesson for Key Stage 2 which included games, discussion, images, videos and an interactive quiz.  Her teacher said,

“Lauren is a credit to the school as a Digital Leader and I would be very happy for her to teach our children about using Digital Media both safely and effectively in the future.”

Wow, well done Brendon School and Lauren for being such an inspirational Digital Leader!

Acklam Grange School

Acklam Grange School Digital Leaders invited their partner primary schools to visit and take part in a range of activities for Safer Internet Day.

We are very impressed that the Acklam Grange Digital Leaders are sharing their knowledge and experience with their local community and also spreading the word about the Digital Leaders Programme!

Thank you to all the Digital Leaders!

Thank you to all Digital Leaders schools who took part and celebrated Safer Internet Day. Take a look at our blog about how some Digital Leaders were involved in the Safer Internet Day London event here also.

If your Digital Leaders have gone over and above in their mission to spread internet safety knowledge we would love to hear about it! Please contact: [email protected] if you would like to feature in a Childnet Digital Leaders blog or if your students are interested in writing a guest blog. You can also share what your Digital LEaders have been up to with us on our new twitter @ChildnetDL #ChildnetDL

Digital Leaders educate industry experts and Ministers during Safer Internet Day 2019

Posted on

Childnet Digital Leaders made a huge splash at this year’s Safer Internet Day event at the BT Centre in central London. Safer Internet Day is organised each year in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre. Digital Leaders from Hoxton Garden Primary, Kaizen Primary School, Mayfield School, Orchard Primary School, Sarah Bonnell School, Southwold Primary School and Titus Salt School all attended the event along with Dr Challoner’s High School and Dundonald Primary School. They facilitated the day, delivered the key note speech, spoke on the youth panel and ran workshops to educate attendees on how to be safe online, while focusing on this year’s theme of ‘Our internet, our choice: understanding consent in a digital world’.

Israa from Sarah Bonnell School was an incredible youth host during the entire afternoon, introducing speakers to the stage including Minister for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Margot James, Department for Education Minister for Children and Families, Nadhim Zahawi, and BT’s CEO of Consumer Brands, Marc Allera. She demonstrated her good humour and bubbly personality all to a highly professional standard – awesome job, Israa!

Will from Titus Salt School was our youth keynote speaker. He had the whole auditorium’s attention and during his speech he was confident, articulate and inspirational! Not only this, but he was also interviewed by BBC Own It and BBC News and must have come away feeling like a true celebrity – you were absolutely fantastic; well done, Will!

Mayfield School look at permission online

Mayfield School’s workshop looked at the different ways people give permission for their data to be used online. They asked visitors to vote, on a sliding scale, on what sorts of data they were happy to share and how happy they were to share that data on various different platforms. They had a ‘True or False’ data quiz which, whilst being incredibly fun, also surprised many visitors with its answers! An example of a statement was from WhatsApp’s privacy policy and said ‘Once a message has been delivered, it no longer resides on our servers’. Many visitors were amazed that this was true! Margot James also visited their workshop and engaged in some interesting discussions with them.

Kaizen Primary School explore how we give consent online

Kaizen Primary School’s workshop asked guests to respond to a series of statements about online consent, and then to explore different ways that we can ask for, give and receive consent. They also asked guests to record on a Padlet why consent is important to them and where they would expect to give consent. You can see the range of responses at the following link: https://padlet.com/admin413/SID2019

Sarah Bonnell School discuss different types of consent

Sarah Bonnell School ran a workshop to discuss the different types of consent we might encounter online, and then used an online interactive platform to submit how you could best respond to different scenarios.

Viridis Schools Federation get the guests thinking about gaming

The Viridis Schools Federation is made up of Hoxton Garden Primary, Orchard Primary School and Southwold Primary School.

These three schools used a gaming scenario to ask guests to decide how issues of consent online can make them feel and the emotions it can cause. They were then asked to consider what they could do to make sure consent is asked for. They also ran a great quiz on online issues!

We also saw a youth panel consisting of six young people, four of whom were Digital Leaders. These were Harriet from Kaizen Primary, Homyra from Mayfield School, Zahra from Sarah Bonnell and Morgan from Southwold Primary. They all did a brilliant job talking about consent and answering questions from Kate Russell, a BBC journalist – a great effort and confidence shown by all!

Digital Leaders interview the UK’s Chief Medical Officer

Israa and Maariyah, Digital Leaders from Sarah Bonnell School, were invited by BBC News to interview Professor Dame Sally Davies, the UK Chief Medical Officer, about the official guidance released about children’s screen time. They did a great job – well done to both of you!

Childnet Digital Leaders get set for Safer Internet Day 2019!

Posted on

With Safer Internet Day coming up on 5th February, the Digital Leader’s preparations are in full swing!

It’s that time of year again and Childnet Digital Leaders from all over the UK are currently preparing activities to run in their schools to raise awareness of Safer Internet Day and educate their peers about how to build a better internet. The theme this year is ‘Safer Internet Day: Together for a better internet’. Children and young people, schools, parents and carers, and organisations all across the UK are invited to make a pledge to do something great and positive online this Safer Internet Day using the hashtag #OurInternetOurChoice.

Delivered by Childnet, as part of its work as one of three charities in the UK Safer Internet Centre, the Childnet Digital Leaders Programme trains young people to be online safety peer educators. Below you will see a few examples of what our wonderful Digital Leader teams are doing in order to raise awareness this year.

Cathays High

The Digital Leaders at Cathays High in Cardiff have been working hard last term completing their online training modules. They have trained in topics such as ‘Fake News’ and ‘Creating a Kinder Internet’, and have all earned their Digital Leader badge and certificate. A great achievement! The team have been very busy in the lead up to Safer Internet Day and the Digital Leaders have planned a whole school assembly to run throughout the week. They have also designed flyers to hand out to their peers, educating them on how to stay safe not only on Safer Internet Day, but every time they go online.

St John Bosco RC Primary

The Childnet team had the pleasure of visiting the Digital Leaders at St John Bosco RC Primary in Manchester on the 19th October last year. Prior to the visit, the Digital Leaders had prepared their own internet safety posters based around the SMART rules. We were super impressed by all their hard work and it is no wonder that the team are now incredibly busy getting themselves ready for Safer Internet Day. The Digital Leaders are conducting a questionnaire for pupils to complete and each class is going to make a permission pledge. Not only this, but the Digital Leaders are even going to be presenting to the parents about internet safety! We are sure this will be highly valuable for all involved. Well done yet again to the dedicated team at St John Bosco RC Primary!

Selston High School

One of our brilliant Digital Champions, Jess, attends Selston High and is helping lead activities this Safer Internet Day. They are planning to have some great and engaging assemblies for each year group in the school, and their Digital Leaders are helping staff to deliver a lesson on consent to students in Years 8&9. They are also pledging, as a whole school, to take positive action to make the internet a kinder place – fantastic stuff!

King’s Ely Junior School

King’s Ely Junior School are running a whole school assembly which will encourage safer digital use. Their Year 5-7 Digital Leaders are also running individual class assemblies on safer use of the internet and have been busy creating a video for a special assembly!

Reigate St Mary’s Preparatory and Choir School

The Digital Leaders at Reigate St Mary’s Preparatory and Choir School have been busy putting up posters in order to raise awareness of and promote Safer Internet Day. Great work Digital Leaders!

Harnessing the power of youth

Young people across the UK are delivering activities in support of Safer Internet Day and we’ve been very inspired to hear about all the creative ways our Digital Leaders are raising awareness of Safer Internet Day 2019.

Student guest blog about attending the Safer Internet Forum 2018

Posted on

Hadia, a Digital Leader from Canons High School, was chosen to form part of this years Better Internet for Kids (BIK) Youth Panel.  She attended the Safer Internet Forum (SIF) in Brussels and wrote this guest blog, with her Group Leader Ms Shah, about her experience.

Each year since 2008, BIK Youth Panel has been organised prior to and during the annual BIK conference SIF in Brussels, encouraging a group of youth panellists to voice not just their personal opinions and challenges, but also those of their peers who they are representing at a European level.

I was honoured to be nominated by Childnet and represent the UK at the SIF as the representative for the BIK youth team. There were 18 other youth members (aged 14-19) who came from 14 different European countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway and Portugal. Yes, that is quite a lot of countries!

Prior to our participation on the panel, we all ‘virtually’ met through four webinars where we attempted to discuss and decide our overall theme for the campaign: Critical thinking. This concept would be addressed through a ‘deep-dive’ session that we, the youth, co-ordinated and created.

As I had only met the other panellists online, I was unsure about how we would interact in person. How would everyone work together? How would be bring our ideas together? Will everyone get along? Fortunately, I had nothing to worry about! The other youth panellists was incredibly friendly, energetic and inspirational and I had an amazing time working with them.

On Sunday 18th November 2018, Miss Shah and I took the Eurostar to Brussels where the 3 day conference was going to be held.

We had an early start the next day and after breakfast, headed to the Google HQ to spend the day working on our concept. We proposed several key messages for our campaign, eventually agreeing upon “It is normal not wanting to share everything; therefore, you shouldn’t compare yourself to others.

We then talked about how we would structure our youth sessions at the SIF Conference. This included deciding the structure of our deep-dive session and the choosing the hashtag for our campaign: #MyDigitalSelfandI.

We formed two groups: one working on the content of the deep-dive session and the other working on creating a video to spread our message. The deep dive group was further split into several subgroups, with panellists working on a particular theme that we would be discussing with those attending the conference. These included, ‘How digital devices impact young people’s lives’, ‘Safety’, ‘Copyright’, ‘Fake news’, ‘GDPR and children’s rights’ and ‘Creators’.

I was part of the team that was involved in creating and producing the video that would showcase our campaign as well as launch our hashtag. It was a challenging but fun task and we did have a few hiccups along the way. Creative blocks, tiresome video editing and having to re-shoot lost sections of footage made for a very busy but productive day. Eventually, quite late at night, we finished working on the video and it was ready to be posted on You Tube and launched at the conference.

Following on from the Keynote speeches at the SIF, the BIK Youth panellists were ready to run our deep-dive sessions. We also presented the video we had created. Our sessions were very well attended and we were given very positive feedback. Mariya Gabriel, the European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society and the main keynote speaker, commended us for our hard work and commitment and told us “Do not be afraid to speak up, talk about what you want, what you need, what you are afraid of.”

I had an amazing time in Brussels where I got to work with some incredible young people who came from different countries. Despite our multicultural backgrounds, we had so much in common with each other and I really enjoyed learning about their lives. I still keep in touch with them and I feel that we will be lifelong friends.

This was a fantastic opportunity for me and helped with building my confidence and public speaking skills and gave me the opportunity to speak about online safety policy to an EU wide audience as well as act as a representative for the whole of the UK.

Thank you to Miss Shah, Childnet, BIK Youth and the wonderful people I met for this incredible experience. This event was truly one that I shall always remember.

Thank you to Hadia for sharing your experience and for being such an inspirational Digital Leader!  If your Digital Leaders would like to write a guest blog, please email [email protected]

Students write guest blog about the Facebook Community Boost event

Posted on

On the 14th November Digital Leaders from Woodford County High School attended the Facebook Community Boost event and spoke to MPs. Students, Leya, Farisha and Eman have written a blog about their experience.

Digital Leaders speak to MP Digital Leaders speak to MP Digital Leaders speak to Will Childnet CEO MPs look at the Digital Leaders platform with students Digital Leaders have photo taken with MPs

Hi everyone! We are from Woodford County High School located in South Woodford (London if you didn’t know) and recently, we went to the Facebook Community Boost event held by Facebook at Millbank Tower in Pimlico.

The train ride was extremely long, people from all over London were coming and going – and as you can imagine, the train was extremely crowded!  We entered the building earlier than we expected and were warmly welcomed by the staff. We met Caroline Hurst, the previous Director of Education at Childnet and we were given special lanyards stating our business there.

We were led to the VIP elevator and into the event hall with a picturesque view of the River Thames. We were gifted an Instagram pop socket, notebook and a pen. Then they offered us food and we were given a tour around the building. We met people who are running various projects with the aim to help local communities. There were many props to play around with and there was an Instagram swing that we got to take a picture on. After this, the aim of the main event started.

Various MPs came through the door and visited our stand. We talked about how amazing being a Digital Leader is and what we have established so far.  We talked with various MPs, like Jack Brereton, who also gave us advice on what we could do to help our own communities more.

Luckily, we had the chance to speak with the CEO of Childnet, Will Gardner. He complimented us on our work so far and how well we were articulating ourselves when speaking with the guests. He even gave us advice on what we could do in the future to include our peers more through events like assemblies.

This event was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Although we felt nervous at the beginning, we conquered our fears and were able to speak confidently with the guests. It also helped that they were extremely friendly and relaxed talking with us about the topic of technology and how it affects society.

We got to learn more about how we can have bigger impact on our society and we are feeling more confident in ourselves. We would also like to think we influenced at least one of the MPs as he called us inspiring!

We would like to thank the CEO of Childnet and his team, including Danielle Antha and Caroline Hurst. We would like to thank Facebook for the event and our teacher for choosing us to participate!

AND THANK YOU CHILDNET FOR BEING AWESOME!

We would like to thank the Woodford County High Digital Leaders for being such fantastic representatives of the Digital Leaders Programme, and a special thank you to Leya, Farisha and Eman for writing this blog.  If your Digital Leaders would like to write a guest blog, please contact [email protected]

What did Childnet Digital Leaders schools do for Anti-Bullying Week 2018?

Posted on

Anti-bullying week 2018 ran from 19th to 23rd of November 2018 and Digital Leaders from around the UK ran a variety of fantastic events.  For sharing their Anti-Bullying Week activities on the platform, Digital Leaders received a badge and 100 points!

Clayesmore Preparatory School

Clayesmore Preparatory School present in assembly

Digital Leaders at Clayesmore Preparatory School wore colourful hats instead of odd socks to celebrate diversity and to make sure they were seen in their school assembly where they did an anti-bullying presentation.  They talked about how to show respect to others and played the ‘UNIQUE’ song by Andy and the Odd Socks!

Bromley High School Juniors

Bromley High School Juniors posters for being a good online friend

The Bromley High School Juniors Digital Leaders made their own presentations on cyberbullying and shared these during registrations periods with form groups around the school.  They really thought about their audience by tailoring their sessions appropriately for the age group they were working with.  The Digital Leaders shared their ‘How to be a good friend online’ posters in assembly and they also wrote a blog on their school site to share their Anti-Bullying Week activities with parents and carers.

Hazelmere Junior School

Hazelmere Junior School student's pledge to be kind

Hazelmere Junior School Digital Leaders started a ‘100 acts of kindness’ challenge, whereby children could tick off a name on their classroom wall chart if that person had been kind to them.  Certificates were then given in assembly to those who had shown kindness throughout the week.  The week showed students and teachers how important it is to be kind to others, not only for Anti-Bullying Week, but all year round!

St Mary’s Church of England School in Woodbridge

St Mary’s Church of England School in Woodbridge cybebullying assembly

St Mary’s Church of England School in Woodbridge did a presentation on cyberbullying in their school assembly wearing their odd socks.  They talked about what cyberbullying is and how to report it.  They also took part in a role play exercise to show what you should do if you are cyberbullied.

Manor Junior School

Manor Junior School odd socks

Manor Junior School took part in Odd Sock Day and ran workshops and assemblies throughout the week on cyberbullying and anti-bullying.  In the workshops they acted out how bullying can affect people’s lives and how to deal with these issues.  The school also carried out a survey with the children on anti-bullying and found ‘The biggest concern shared by pupils is the name calling in the playground.’  To help to with this concern, Manor Junior School are introducing playground pals to develop positive play, as well as training staff on how to promote positive play.

Acklam Grange School

Student guest blog on Anti-Bullying Week 2018

Posted on

Mo, a Digital Leader from Acklam Grange School, wrote us a blog about what his school did for Anti-Bullying Week 2018.

For Anti-Bullying Week 2018, our team organised an open mic-day. On the open mic-day we sold cakes, popcorn, drinks and we took donations for stickers. We also had a photo-booth!

We sang the ‘Choose Respect’ song and created a video. This was shown to staff on the Monday in their morning briefing to promote Anti-Bullying Week.

During the open mic-day we had student performances including singing, dancing and drumming. We had students from all year groups performing and we even had a teacher perform who made the audience go ‘WOW!’

The audience were superb and made it easy for the performers as they encouraged them and made them feel even more confident. The audience and wonderful teaching staff contributed well and our Head Teacher was there to help calm the audience down if they were getting too wild (in a good way)!  It was great for students and they are still talking about the performers and how fantastic Anti-Bullying Week was!

On top of this the school teaching staff designed a lesson about respecting yourself, others and the community, and students made a poster about respect. They also spoke about how to apply respect on a daily basis.

Our aims for Anti-Bullying Week were to make the week enjoyable and to show that people should treat others the way they want to be treated.

Thank you Acklam Grange students and Mo for putting on such a fantastic event and sharing it with the Digital Leaders community.  If your Digital Leaders would like to write a guest blog, please contact [email protected]

Childnet Digital Leaders from the North come together for the first ever regional event!

Posted on

Last week the Childnet Digital Leaders from Acklam Grange School, Berwick Hills Primary School, Bolton Muslim Girls’ School, Christ Church CV (VC) Primary School, Hasland Junior School and Titus Salt School came together for our first ever Digital Leaders Regional Event! At this event they shared their knowledge, best practice and ideas for how they can implement online safety education in their schools.

What is the Childnet Digital Leaders programme?

The Childnet Digital Leaders Programme is a youth leadership training programme empowering young people to educate their peers about online safety.

We are the only online safety charity in the UK delivering an online peer to peer programme that directly helps schools to embed online safety. Once on board, groups of Digital Leaders complete training through an engaging, informative and fun online platform, working through e-learning modules to equip them with the skills to become peer mentors in their schools, and help keep others safe online. When they are qualified, Digital Leaders are encouraged to advocate for online safety in their schools and communities by running offline and online activities, for which they will be awarded additional team achievement badges and points.

What happened at the event?

At the regional event 60 qualified Digital Leaders from 6 schools came together to discuss their work on the programme, and to meet others who are doing the same things as them as part of the programme.

The young people took part in activities throughout the day, including quizzes, moral compass activities and workshops on talking to different audiences about key topics such as cyberbullying.

There was then the first ever ‘star awards’ ceremony where young people, who had been nominated by their teachers, were given awards for the great things they had achieved as Digital Leaders.

The event was MC’d by Conor, a Digital Leader from Acklam Grange School, who did a great job of introducing the event and making sure the young people were excited for what was about to come.

Sharing ideas

The event was a great chance for the Digital Leaders to share their thoughts and ideas about the programme, whilst also discussing the challenges and great successes they’ve faced as Digital Leaders.

The young people from Titus Salt and Berwick Hills Primary School created stall displays that showcased what they had been up to over the last year, including great examples of presentations, resources and events that they had run.

Future events

We will be hosting more Digital Leaders events throughout the year, so team leaders should keep an eye on their inboxes over the coming months for more details!
